A variety of techniques and exercises that promote healing, relieve pain, restore function, and improve overall physical well-being.
Physiotherapy, also known as physical therapy, is a healthcare profession that focuses on evaluating, diagnosing, and treating conditions affecting the musculoskeletal, neurological, and cardiovascular systems.
Physiotherapists are trained professionals who use a variety of techniques and exercises to promote healing, relieve pain, restore function, and improve overall physical well-being.
At Adelaide West Physiotherapy, our main focus is manual physiotherapy for musculoskeletal/orthopaedic and certain nerve-related conditions.
Manual physiotherapy, also known as manual therapy, is a specialized form of physical therapy that involves hands-on techniques performed by trained physiotherapists. It is aimed at assessing, diagnosing, and treating musculoskeletal conditions and movement dysfunctions
In manual physiotherapy, the physiotherapist uses their hands to mobilize and manipulate the joints, muscles, and soft tissues of the body. The goal is to improve joint mobility, reduce pain, restore normal movement patterns, and enhance overall physical function.
The therapist applies gentle, controlled movements to the joints to restore their normal range of motion, reduce stiffness, and alleviate pain.
This technique involves various hands-on approaches such as massage, myofascial release, and trigger point therapy to target muscles, tendons, ligaments, and fascia. It aims to reduce muscle tension, improve circulation, and promote tissue healing.
Manipulative techniques, such as high-velocity low-amplitude thrusts, may be used to restore joint alignment and function. These techniques are often employed for spinal conditions, such as back or neck pain.
MET involves the active participation of the patient in resisted muscle contractions and relaxation, combined with specific joint movements. It is used to improve joint mobility, strengthen weak muscles, and correct muscle imbalances.
The therapist uses gentle stretching techniques to lengthen tight muscles, improve flexibility, and increase range of motion.
Manual physiotherapy can be beneficial for various musculoskeletal conditions, including back and neck pain, joint pain, sports injuries, post-surgical rehabilitation, and repetitive strain injuries. It is often combined with exercise therapy, patient education, and other physiotherapy modalities such as Gunn IMS to provide comprehensive care.
All of our physiotherapists have received extensive training in manual therapy and are fellows of the Canadian Academy of Manipulative Physiotherapists (FCAMPT).
